As we head of on our summer holidays, it's time to get beach confident. A new poll has found that 64% of 50 plus women hate wearing swimwear, compared to 70% of 18–25 year olds who love flaunting their cleavage (50%) and shoulders (60%).

The survey by online retailer isme.com, revealed that British women feel least confident in Europe, and spend days worrying about their choice of bikini before they even dare to bare.

Brix Start Smith says there is no 'bikini age'. She recommends swimwear with panelling to control a midriff or with a skirt to cover your bum and plenty of accessories – a big straw bag, oversized sunglasses and a chunky necklace can all help draw attention to areas you’d love to flaunt.

“We can all look fabulous on the beach – no matter what our shape, size or age – and shouldn’t be scared of stripping off in front of our European neighbours," she said.

"I’m not surprised women take can take up to an hour to pick swimwear, it is a tricky garment to get right but you feel like you’ve hit the jackpot when you do find the perfect fit.”

The survey also found that more than half (58%) fear looking fat when caught on camera and almost three in four (78%) want to hide their midriff and keep their bum covered up (68%). The biggest consideration when picking a swimsuit was to cover up wobbly bits (39%), followed closely by feeling comfortable (29%). Looking sexy and sophisticated came at the bottom of the list (13%).
