Top tips for healthy teeth and gums
It's often been said that a smile is the best accessory anyone can wear. Of course, that only really applies if that smile is a healthy smile! In the UK more and more people are opting to have cosmetic dentistry in an attempt to restore their smile.
But cosmetic dentistry can be expensive. So to avoid the need to have any, follow our top tips on keeping your teeth and gums beautiful and healthy.
Brush regularly
You should, of course, be brushing your teeth twice a day – in the morning and in the evening. However, some experts believe that might not be enough. Since we eat throughout the day our teeth are being exposed to food and bacteria for long amounts of time in between brushing. If possible brush your teeth after every meal. If not chew some sugar free gum after eating.
Use dental floss
Food particles can get stuck in between our teeth and often these are missed when brushing. To make sure you get any food particles out of your teeth you should floss, at least twice a day. Dental floss is inexpensive and easy to carry around in a jacket pocket or a handbag so there's no excuse not to have any!
See your dentist regularly
The recommended time to see your dentist is every six months however not everyone abides by this. Unlike doctors, who we only see when we are ill, we should visit our dentist every six months even if it seems like there is nothing wrong with your teeth. Make sure you have a good dentist you can trust and, if you are uncomfortable in the dentist's chair, one that can ease any fears you may have and then stick to your appointments.
Use mouthwash
After brushing your teeth you should use a mouthwash to rinse away any particles you have missed. Mouthwash can also remove bacteria from other parts of your mouth such as your tongue and gums – without using it once you have finished brushing your teeth they are being exposed to bacteria again from your mouth! Mouthwash also freshens your breath so get into the habit of using it after brushing.
Avoid sugary foods
Sugary, starchy foods can cause tooth decay. Even fruit can cause damage to your teeth if you eat too much of it so watch what you are eating and be sure to brush your teeth as soon as you can after you eat something sugary.
