Slimming club members support junk food tax

A much-discussed junk food tax would have the backing of the country, it seems - or at least those of us who are trying to lose weight.

A poll for Slimming World of around 1,000 members found that the majority would support a junk food tax – if the money raised was used to subsidise the cost of healthy foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

There are now more than 7,800 Slimming World groups held weekly nationwide via a network of 3,000 Slimming World trained Consultants. 48% of its members said they were in favour of extra tax on junk food.

Obesity is a growing problem in the UK, with many ladies going beyond an extra inch here and there to a level of weight that is seriously threatening their health and wellbeing. Predictions by The Lancet state that around half of people will have an obese BMI by 2030.

Jenny Caven, Slimming World spokeswoman said: “It’s clear from this poll that finding ways of making healthy filling foods like fruit and vegetables, pasta, potatoes, rice, lean meat and fish – all of which can be eaten in unlimited amounts at Slimming World – more affordable for the average shopper would be hugely supported by our members as a way to encourage healthier lifestyles.”
