Women more likely to research hospital options

Are women more savvy with their hospital choices? New research by Nuffield Health has found that people are choosing their hospitals based on the location rather than the quality of care they will receive there. Women and Londoners are more likely to research than men or the Scottish, the poll found. 7% of people interviewed had concerns about picking up infections in hospital, while 69% of people fear poor hygiene in hospital.

45% said that location was the key influencer and 58% admitted to not researching the hospital before they visit.

78% of people want to make the decisions about their health jointly with their doctor and only 13% of people are willing to leave all decisions to their doctor.

Dr Andrew Jones, Medical Director of Nuffield Heath said of “We know that hygiene and the risk of infection is of huge concern to people ... yet despite this, they do not seem to be researching these issues before they go in for a procedure.”
