Five simple changes to your diet that can help you lose weight

Wednesday, 7 March 2012 4:20 PM

When it comes to losing weight usually a healthy chunk of willpower is required. Giving up all of your favourite foods, ditching that evening glass of wine and clearing your cupboards of chocolate is hard and most people find themselves giving up after a matter of days.

Making drastic changes to your diet usually means making drastic changes to your lifestyle too and if you’re not willing to do that just yet you could find yourself falling at the first hurdle.

However it is possible to improve your diet, and in doing so your health and your weight, by just making a few simple changes to your everyday eating plan – changes so small that you’ll hardly notice but that can make a big difference.

Here we take a look at five simple choices you can make in order to lose weight and get healthy.

Ditch white bread in favour of brown
If you love toast or you don’t want to give up your lunchtime sandwich simply change the bread you’re using. Switch to brown bread instead of white. Brown is much healthier. If you want t be extra good you could opt to have pitta bread with your sandwiches instead.

Opt for skimmed milk
There’s nothing quite like a nice brew is there? Most of us don’t start to function until we’ve have our morning cup of tea or coffee. Well, thankfully you don’t have to give that up. Instead you simply need to switch the type of milk you’re putting in it! Switch to skimmed milk from full fat and you’ll be saving calories without losing taste.

Cut out soft drinks
Soft drinks, especially those that contain caffeine, can get a bit addictive but they are no good for you and offer no vitamins or nutrients whatsoever. They’re also a waste of calories. Have water or orange juice instead. You won’t miss the soft drinks too much and you’ll feel much better for doing so.

Change your snacks
Often snacking is something we do out of boredom. If the afternoon in the office is feeling particularly long we reach for the biscuits or crisps to give us something to do and brighten up a dull day. Opt for fruit, nuts or seeds instead.

Portion control
Did you know you don’t necessarily have to give up all of your favourite foods to lose weight? You simply have to make sure you are not eating too much of them. Keep an eye on your portions. If you struggle do like some celebrities and buy a smaller set of plates!
