Spring-clean your lifestyle

Monday, 19 March 2012 8:48 PM

The season of spring offers us all a chance to start again. With springtime comes new life and new beginnings and, as such, the chance for us to give our lives a bit of a spring clean! It's a case of out of the old and in with the new so why not banish the bad habits, spring clean your lifestyle and start spring 2012 fitter, healthier and happier.

Here we give you some tips and tricks to do just that.

Make the most of the light mornings and evenings
One of the reasons many of us quit exercising is we can't seem to find the time to fit in an exercise routine. During the winter months when there are much less hours of daylight the days can seem much shorter. As such it can seem impossible to find the time to go the gym. With the lighter mornings and evenings that spring brings, there's suddenly seems to be more hours in the day! Make the most of them, hit the gym or go for an early morning or late evening run.

Swap heavy foods for summery salads
During winter it's easy to be tempted by stodgy, calorific foods. After getting in from the miserable weather it's tempting to tuck in to hearty foods like casseroles and stews. But in the nicer weather it's much easier to resist that temptation. On warmer days stodgy food is less appealing. Instead opt for light, summery salads, fish or chicken.

Walk to work
Sometimes it's the simplest changes that can have the biggest effect. Walking to work is one such change. Most of us take the car or the bus because it's easier and, let's face it, we get lazy. But walking to work can help you to cut calories and improve your health without even making much of an effort!

Quit smoking
Quitting smoking isn't easy. But we are all well aware of the problems that smoking can cause. So why not make the most of the new start spring present us all with and at least try to cut down. Try to break the habits that surround your smoking. If you smoke after lunch, start taking a brisk walk after lunch instead and make that your new routine. Cutting down will help you to feel healthier and  may give you the push you need to finally quit smoking for good.
